CLASSROOM COMMUNITY
Camp Bookworm
Surprising my students with this classroom transformation is such a happy memory for me. Around the "campfire," we read The Life of a S'more to celebrate diversity and read independently with flashlights in our "tents."
Black History Month Living Museum
My students and I contributed to the school's Black History Month Living Museum by analyzing Maya Angelou's poem, Life Doesn't Frighten Me. We read the book by the same title illustrated by Jean Michel Basquiat. For the "living" component of the museum, two of my students recited the poem for visitors as they walked by.
Author's Chair Celebration
To conclude a month-long research simulation writing task unit, students participated in an authors chair celebration. Students were invited to sit at the front of the room in the author's chair and read their essay aloud. Each student was assigned a partner to provide written feedback to as they read.
Llama Llama Red Pajama Dance Contest
To kick-off Read Across America Week, my school created a competition in which students can follow a choreographed dance to the book Llama Llama Red Pajama rapped by Ludacris. Below is a video of my class and I participating in the contest.
