MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I believe that the success of a student relies on a cooperative effort from both the student and his or her teacher. As an educator, I will strive to understand every student on a personal level, rather than analyzing his or her academic performance alone. In the diverse world we live in, there is an unlimited number of factors that can affect a student’s performance. While some may be more obvious than others, many of these factors take courage from the student to speak up, but more importantly an inquisitive teacher who is willing to investigate.
One factor that is consistently present in the classroom is an abundance of cultural backgrounds. In order to make strides to better understand my students, I will take a closer look into these backgrounds that differ from my own to better serve my students who are raised with unique values and traditions. In my classroom, cultural differences will always be celebrated, explored, and embraced.
Social interactions between students, both positive and negative, can also take a toll on a student’s academic performance. Positive interaction between students can lead to self-confidence, a source of comfort in the educational setting, and motivation to attend classes. However, if one student negatively influences another, it will likely be a detriment to learning progress and classroom behavior. Similarly, bullying is extremely dangerous to a student’s emotional, mental and, physical health. Rather than blaming declining grades on a student’s work ethic, I will watch student interactions, both inside and outside of the classroom, to ensure that students feel safe and supported at school.
Ultimately, I believe that for a teacher to truly help a student, he or she must have awareness of the student’s entire educational experience. Every student has unique experiences, interests, conflicts, and struggles, and these are not simply left outside the classroom door. As a teacher, it will be my mission to teach not just the student, but the whole person.
